Abstract

The combining ability estimates of 10 bivoltine silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) breeds were analyzed in a 10 x 10 diallel cross analysis (excluding reciprocals) for 8 quantitative traits viz. number of eggs per laying, weight of 10 mature larvae, cocoon yield and number, single cocoon weight, single shell weight, shell ratio (%) and filament length. The analysis revealed that mean squares due to gca (general combining ability) and sca (specific combining ability) were significant indicating that both additive and non-additive gene actions were operative in the expression of these characters. The 2gca/2sca ratio was less than unity in all the traits indicating preponderance of non-additive gene action. KA, P5 and NB4D2 were found to be good general combiners for all the traits. The crosses which exhibited high sca effects, had one parent with positive and one parent with negative gca effect. No cross was found to be a good specific combiner for any of the traits under study.
