Abstract

Food security both at the national and household levels has been the focus of agricultural development in India and cropping patterns in were confined to foodgrains production. The technology-led growth in agriculture sector transformed India from a food deficient and import dependent to food self-sufficient economy to a great extent but resulted in a tendency towards cereal-centered specialization with serious environmental issues. In the post-reform period, the agriculture sector witnessed a sharp deceleration in both area and yield growth. The diversification towards high value crops emerged as a strategy to revive the growth in agriculture sector. The households would diversify and the income generated can be used to meet the household food and other requirements. But some studies highlighted the concern of adverse impact of diversification on household food security. This study analyzed the impact of diversification towards high value crops on food security. The results of the study show that the diversification towards high value crops does not have any adverse impact on food security of the households. The poor functioning of markets and financial institutions may induce the households for maintaining higher subsistence levels but diversification does not have adverse impact on their food security. Also the analysis shows that diversification in terms of multiple cropping does not have any negative influence the household food security. Thus both the staple crop production and diversification towards high income crops supplement each other and improve household level food security.
