Online published on 7 December, 2011. Abstract Embryonic development of teeth relies on a series of reciprocal inductive signaling between two adjacent tissues, an epithelium and mesenchyme. Genes are identified as being important for communication between epithelium and ectomesenchymal cells. Number of genes has been identified that act at specific stages of tooth development and regulate its patterning and differentiation process. In this era of advancement Gene therapy has been an emerging field of biomedicine that has commanded considerable attention. With the conventional methods of treatment failing to render satisfactory results, gene therapy is not only being used for cure of inherited disease but also acquired ones. The aim of this article is to throw light on the genes involved in tooth development and the methodology, applications and future of gene therapy.
