Abstract Aim/Objective To investigate the effect of in-office bleaching products employing the use of strong oxidizing agents on the surface finish of direct tooth colored restorations. Materials and Method Tooth colored restoratives were divided into four material groups. Eighteen specimens of each material were fabricated, randomly divided into three treatment subgroups of six specimens each and treated as follows – Subgroup I: stored in distilled water at 37°C for three weeks (control); Subgroup II: treated with 35% carbamide peroxide for 30minutes/week for three weeks; Subgroup III: treated with 35% hydrogen peroxide power bleach for 30 minutes/week for three weeks with each 30 min session consisting of two 15 minute cycles of gel application with 20-second light exposure. For Subgroup II and III, specimens were stored in distilled water at 37°C during the hiatus period. The treated specimens were subsequently subjected to surface roughness measurements using profilometer every week after each bleaching session. Results No significant differences in surface finish of the bleached & the control subgroups for all materials at all the treatment sessions was found. However significant differences in surface finish of various group of materials was observed. Conclusion The effects of in-office bleaching products on surface finish though not statistically significant were material & bleaching agent dependant, with hydrogen peroxide causing relatively rougher surface.
