Therefore, the formerly independent disciplines of orthodontics, periodontics, restorative dentistry and maxillofacial surgery must often join together to satisfy the patients desire to look better. Constant interaction and communication among the team members and the patient at all levels of treatment are the keys to the success of the interdisciplinary treatment. This article reviews the interdisciplinary approach of the periodontal disease among the different branches of dentistry along with the considerations of the special needs patients. Individuals with special needs demonstrate a complex interplay of social, medical and psychological factors, which makes management of health and oral health more challenging and requires a coordinated health-care team approach.
