Abstract

Introduction

Anaemia is the most prevalent nutritional problem in India. It is a condition in which the haemoglobin level in body is less than 12gm/dl. Adolescents are at high risk for acquiring anaemia because of rapid period of growth, menstruation and poor dietary intake. According to UNICEF report India has the largest population of adolescent (243 million) i.e. 25% with a prevalence of 68.8% anaemia. The solutions for combating anaemia are both inexpensive and effective byproviding iron rich diet.

Aim

The aim of study is to evaluate the effectiveness of nutritional interventions on haemoglobin level among anaemic adolescent girls in rural schools of Tehsil Rajpura, District Patiala, Punjab.

Material & Methods

An experimental study was conducted at two rural schools which were selected by simple random sampling from six rural schools of Tehsil Rajpura, District Patiala, Punjab. Lottery cum block random sampling technique was used to select the sample of 60 anaemic adolescent girls. The adolescent girls underwent pre and post Hb estimation by Standardized Dr. Tallqvist haemoglobin estimation scale recommended by WHO. The experimental group was provided with nutritional interventions (nutritious Iadoo (50gm) and guava (20gm) one on each day) for a period of 30 days under supervision of investigatorandone oftheir teacher.

Results

The results revealed that the prevalence of anaemia in adolescent girls was 95.5%. The findings also revealed that after implementation of nutritional intenrventions, the mean post Hb level of subjects was 9.47 in experimental group and 8.77 in control group with mean difference of 0.70. The calculated ‘t ’value of 2. 24 was found to be statistically significant at 0.05 level.

Conclusion

It was concluded that there was the effectiveness of nutritional intenrventions on haemoglobin level among anaemic adolescent girls with mean difference of 1.04 between mean pre and postHb level.
