Autologous PRF in Degree II Furcation Treatment: A Clinicoradiographic Study Using Dentascan

Abstract

Background

Periodontal regeneration outcome in furcation defects are very uncertain but mandibular grade II furcations are considered treatable sites. Autologous PRF has proved its potential in intrabony defects and various other clinical situation.

Objective

This study evaluated the effect of autologous PRF in the treatment of mandibular degree II furcation defects.

Methods

20 patients were included in the study with contralateral grade II furcation defects and were divided into 2 group. In group A open flap debridement was performed followed by PRF placement in furcation defect. In group B only open flap debridement was performed. All the clinical parameters were recorded by plaque index, sulcular bleeding index, probing depth, clinical attachment level and radiographic parameters (vertical height, horizontal depth and furcation width of furcation) using Dentascan at baseline and 9 months postoperatively.

Results

There was a statistically significant improvement at sites treated with PRF and OFD compared to those with OFD alone.

Conclusion

Future long term studies with a large sample size should be carried out to further explore the role of PRF in the management of periodontal furcation defects.
