Abstract

The growth and development ofHelicoverpa armigera Hübner were studied by constructing age-specific life table and age-specific fertility table of female on bud leaves, mature leaves and tender capsules of Flue Cured Virginia (FCV) Tobacco (var. Hema). The insect could not complete its life cycle on mature leaves of FCV tobacco and cent per cent mortality of larvae was recorded by 10th day in its age-specific life table. H. armigera took 40 days to complete age-specific life table on bud leaves, whereas it took 38 days on tender capsules. There was consistently higher mortality of larvae during the first 8 days after hatching on bud leaves. On tender capsules, 55% of the neonates died within two days of hatching. The population of H. armigera consisted of 93–94% of eggs and larval stages after it reached stability on both bud leaves and tender capsules. The age-specific female survivorship was 0.05 and 0.02 on bud leaves and tender capsules respectively. Net reproductive rate of the insect reached a peak on the 4th day after oviposition started on bud leaves. The doubling time and annual rate of increase were 34.66 days and 1.48 x 103 respectively on tender capsules, whereas 13.86 days and 8.43 x 107 respectively on bud leaves. The bud leaves were found to be supporting better growth and development of the insect than tender capsules.
