Abstract

Purpose

To assess the effectiveness of a parent education programme on knowledge regarding home care management of children with epilepsy and compare the pre-test knowledge scores of mothers with the selected demographic variables.

Method

The research approach was quantitative and the design of the study was one group pre-test posttest. The sampling technique was convenience sampling. The sample size of the study was 30 mothers of children with epilepsy. Data was collected with the help of a structured knowledge questionnaire to assess the knowledge of mothers and the demographic details. The analysis was done by using frequency, percentage and t-test.

Results

The mean post-test knowledge score (23.26 + 3.71) is significantly higher than the mean pretest knowledge score (14.50 + 3.62) which indicates that the mothers gained more knowledge after the administration of parent education programme on home care management of children with epilepsy. The comparison of pre-test knowledge scores of mothers with selected demographic variables (p value-0.000) shows that there is significant association between the pre-test knowledge score only in the area of education and occupation of the parents.

Conclusion

The study depicts the importance of implementing education programme for parents of children with epilepsy as it would help to improve knowledge on home care management and follow healthy practices, through which the children can build up a good quality of life.
