Study on cadmium associated microscopic lesions in cattle and buffaloes

Abstract

Histopathological evaluation of visceral organs of cattle and buffaloes were conducted with reference to tissue cadmium (Cd) concentration. Total 62 animals reared near industrial area of Jabalpur city were subjected for detailed post-mortem examination and tissues were collected for cadmium detection and histopathological examination. Based on inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) detected concentration, samples were divided into 3 groups. Majority of tissue samples had Cd level in the range of 0–1 ppm. Liver (5%), kidney (8%) and lung (13%) tissues had Cd level >2 ppm and were considered as high risk group. Histopathological examination of tissues from high risk group showed prominent vascular, degenerative and necrotic changes in liver, kidney and lung tissues.
