Hemato-Biochemical Evaluation-A Prognostic Tool for Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in Canines

Abstract

One hundred and thirteen (113) dogs were diagnosed with Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and categorized as per IRIS, Stage II (9, 7.96 percent), III (35, 30.97 percent) and IV (69, 61.06 percent) on the day of presentation. Mean age of dogs with CKD stage II, III and IV were 5.8, 7.0 and 7.6 years respectively. Mean and standard deviation values for hemoglobin and packed cell volumes (PCV) observed in Stage IV CKD were 7.92 ± 2.10 and 20.73±5.95 respectively. 61.02 Percent of dogs were in Stage IV CKD on the day of presentation out of which 47.82 percent (33/69) had severe azotemia (serum creatinine >10 mg/dl) in addition to moderate to severe anemia. Serum calcium and phosphorous ratios observed were 1: 1.5 in Stage IV CKD. Mean survival time recorded in Stage IV CKD with severe azotemia (serum creatinine >10mg/dl, 47.82 percent, 33/69) was twelve days.
