Abstract

The study evaluates the effect of double PGF2α regimen for synchronising estrus in Malabari goats and diagnose pregnancy by transrectal ultrasonography during early gestation. Twenty goats were administered with two injections of 10 mg Dinoprost, eleven days apart for estrus synchronisation. Twenty five percent (5/20) animals exhibited estrus within 24 hours of treatment whereas 45 (9/20) and 30 (6/20) percent of goats showed heat signs by 48 and 72 hours, respectively. Estrus was observed in all treated does (100 percent response) and conception rate was 70 percent (14/20) when subjected to natural service with fertile bucks. On transrectal ultrasonography, fluid filled embryonic vesicles (7.4±0.59 mm diameter) were visualized as early as 18th day of service whereas, embryo proper (0.88±0.02mm length) and its heart beat could be detected from 24th day onwards. Double PGF2α was found to be an effective method of estrus synchronisation and transrectal ultrasonography is a reliable method for economical pregnancy diagnosis on 18th day of service in Malabari does.
