Abstract

The experiment was attempted to study the transrectal linear probe and transabdominal sector probes for pregnancy assessment in Osmanabadi goats. 22 Osmanabadi does bred naturally after synchronised oestrus and early pregnancy diagnosis were attempted on 15th, 20th, 25th, 30th and 35th day of pregnancy by both probes. Out of 22, 10 goats on 15th day, 15 goats on 20th day and all goats were diagnosed as early pregnant on 25th and 30th day. Scanning of ovarian CL on 15th, 20th and 25th day revealed average diameters 1.47×1.02, 1.54×1.01 and 1.49×1.16 cms respectively. Transrectal probe was used in goats on 15th and 20th day to scan for embryonic vesicle and total 10 and 15 pregnant goats were evaluated, where embryonic vesicle length average was recorded as 0.39 cm and 1.17 cm respectively. Heart beats per minute in goat embryos were clearly recorded on 20th day observed with mean heart beats as 192 and range of 168 to 228 counts on 30th day. Fetal number, indicative of number of kids to be born was totally countable on 35th day by transrectal method in all goats. However by transabdominal probe, there was no detectable structure for confirmation of pregnancy such as embryonic vesicle, corpus luteum on ovary ipsilateral to uterine horn with embryonic vesicle on 15th and 20th day while on 25th day only two goats were confirmed pregnant by examination of embryonic vesicle with embryo and all 18 goats were diagnosed as early pregnant on 30th and 35th day by diagnosing embryonic vesicle, embryo along with heart beats. Fetal number was recorded in all 18 pregnant goats on 42nd day. Considering all the aforesaid pregnancy confirmation criterions, it was clear that transrectal probe provides much earlier pregnancy confirmation in goats than transabdominal scanning.
