Online Published on 31 March, 2023. Abstract Malaria is one of the deadly parasitic diseases affecting human and kills large number of people every year. Emergence of drug resistance to current antimalarials and dearth of antimalarial drugs which can target both the erythrocytic and gametocytic stages are the most triggering factors which necessitate the search for novel antimalarial compounds with different mechanisms of action. Since ancient ages, two most important antimalarial drugs like artemisinin and quinine originated from the medicinal plants like Artemisia annua and Cinchona officinalis respectively have been proved effective in combating malaria. The objective of present study was targeted to analyse the antiplasmodial activities of Calotropis procera hydroalcoholic leaves extract against asexual and sexual stages of chloroquine-sensitive Plasmodium falciparum (3D7 strain). The quantitative analysis of the C. procera extract demonstrated the presence of phenolic and flavonoid content. The findings of antiplasmodial assay revealed promising antimalarial activity of the hydroalcoholic C. procera leaves extract against the asexual as well as sexual stages of P falciparum 3D7 strain with IC50 <10 µg/ml. Based on our study, the hydroalcoholic leaf extract of C. procera may act as potent alternative source for the formulation of novel antimalarial drug for the treatment and prevention of the transmission of malaria infection.
