Abstract

The 3.16 km long Tunnel T1 is a part of Katra-Dharam section of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link Project in the Himalayan region of India. The tunnel passes through the tectonic feature, the Main Boundary Thrust, locally known as the Reasi Thrust. The mined tunnel is under execution by using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method. In the 2.8 kms of tunnelling executed thus far, the main challenges emerge from the unpredictability of ground and the problems posed by suddenly transiting from an impervious mass which is thrusted upon by a water bearing strata that is highly pulverised. Hence grounds comprising of different mechanical behaviour were encountered with a variety of mechanisms of failure viz, gravity driven, squeezing/swelling, visco-elasto-plastic, fully plastic, brittle, and shear failure. In this paper, the challenge of tunnelling through thrust zone, in pockets of high hydrostatic pressure is studied as the tunnelling was executed from the Srinagar side.
