Abstract

Mitotic catastrophy is a process that occurs in somatic cells viz. cells of the body. This process is characterised by intracellular signalling which results in cell death. Although it is regarded as a pre-event to other forms of cell killing, such as apoptosis, oncosis and necrosis, it is related to these cell death events in that the p53 protein is central to eukaryote cell cycle. Furthermore, mitotic catastrophy can be initiated in tissue culture experiments, by using chemical that can cause intracellular signalling and the disruption of the nucleus. This paper would address some significant points about mitotic catastrophy in cell culture experiments.
