Condition assessment of irrigation canal Based on Physical characteristics – a Geo-spatial approach Kulkarni Amol, Nagarajan R. Abstract The canals are most important conveyance systems for transporting water for irrigation in most parts of India, however, many canal irrigation projects are suffering from siltation, cracks in lining and massive weed growth. It leads seepage, loss of biodiversity, erosion, choking of navigational area and reduction in flow capacity of irrigation canals as well. Thereby the availability of water to the farmers is reduced. These complex situations demand the necessity of a quick estimation of condition assessment of irrigation canals. The existing deprived conditions of canals are due to hydraulic changes and managerial issues lowers the performance of the canal compared to design. This study shows the Dudhganga Left Bank Main Canal isn't in good condition due to hydraulic changes to its shape, surface irregularities, and damage to the lining. This paper attempted a quantification of existing canal conditions using classified correction factors to Manning's coefficient at different situations. The results indicate, the Dudhganga Left Bank Main Canal reduced its water carrying capacity by average 49.43% as compared to designed capacity.
