Abstract

Large potential of energy is available in canals. Small hydro power plant can be developed to tap the hydro power energy on canals. The objective of this study is carry out an economic analyses of small hydro power plant at chainage 18234 m (canal fall) on Sakarda branch canal. Hydro power plant components like head race canal, fore bay, penstock, trash rack, air vent pipe, Kaplan turbine, machine hall, erection bay, control bay are designed using Indian Standard specifications. Actual costs of the small hydro plant are calculated applying current market rates. Using discharge data, hydro power potential has been estimated. Considering various project life ranges from 10 to 50 years benefit cost ratio has been estimated for analyses. Results show that benefit cost ratio is more than 1 for the project life 15 to 50 years. And for 10 year project life benefit ratio is less 1, hence it is concluded that for the project life more than 15 years small hydro power plant can be developed. But for the project life less than 10 years small hydro power plant development is not beneficial.
