Quality of work life among employees in coal India limited

Abstract

Work is an integral part of everyday life as it is an individual's livelihood or career. In today's modern world a large chunk of people's life is spent at work. On an average, people spend around eight hours per day in the work place which forms one-third of their entire life. Therefore, work should yield satisfaction, give peace of mind, fulfillment of having done a task and having spent time purposefully, constructively, and fruitfully. The efficiency and effectiveness of an organization depend directly on the ability of its employees and their ability is affected by the working conditions provided by the enterprize. Thus, quality of work-life policies is increasingly becoming part of the organizational strategies and their focus is to influence employee's quality of working life so that they maintain work-life balance with equal attention to performance and commitment at work. The quality of work-life means changing entire organizational climate by humanizing work, individualizing the organization and changing the structural and managerial system. It seeks to create a culture of work commitment in the organization which will ensure higher productivity for the company and greater job satisfaction for the employees. In this backdrop, this study is an empirical study which examines the differences in the satisfaction levels of employees towards the quality of work-life in Coal India Limited across demographic variables. Data was collected through questionnaires designed on a five-point Likert scale. Independent sample t-test and One-Way ANOVA are the statistical tools that have been used for analysis of data. The findings highlighted that significant differences exist in the satisfaction levels of employees towards the quality of work-life across gender, education, the length of service, and cadre but no significant difference has been found across age and income.
