Abstract

It is better that we should know the impact of the computers on the educational system when they are used more and more in schools. It is equally good to know how educational objectives and pedagogy would change with the increasing number of computers in schools. Every one of us is curious to know whether computers would introduce new subjects or new content in the existing curriculum. We are also curious to know whether the use of computers would emphasize different intellectual skills to instruction without computers. Computers facilitate the acquisition of certain skills more rapidly in the learning process. It is also interesting to know whether socio-cultural economic status and personality make up of the learners would affect or influence learning through computers. Syllabus based computer software package for teaching and learning of English at Std. XI in Tamil Nadu have been developed. To develop and validate the CALL package, a workshop for a period of 5 days was conducted with 21 P.G. Teachers of English and 5 computer specialists. The effectiveness of the developed CALL package was tested by means of a quasi experimental study in five Higher Secondary Schools in the Districts of Coimbatore and Erode of Tamil Nadu state. Pre Post-test Post Test Single Experimental Design was availed to collect the required data. Psychological tests measuring intelligence, achievement motivation, achievement anxiety and scientific attitude were also administered to the students who have taken the experimental intervention with CALL Package in Tutorial mode. The scores of pupils on the above said psychological tests were used to test whether the psychological variables of the pupils have any influence in determining the effectiveness of the CALL packages in developing their language skills. The study concludes that the effectiveness of the syllabus based CALL package in English varies with regard to developing the language skill viz. writing among Higher Secondary Students. Drill and Practice as a mode of CALL is more effective when compared to Tutorial as another mode of CALL in realizing the instructional objectives in English at Higher Secondary stage. The psychological variables of the pupils viz. intelligence, achievement motivation, achievement anxiety and scientific attitude determine the effectiveness of the CALL package in developing their language skills.
