Prevalence of rota and coronavirus infections in calves of Barabanki and Raebareli districts of Uttar Pradesh

Abstract

The present study was carried out to investigate the prevalence of important enteric viruses (rotavirus and coronavirus) responsible for causing neonatal calf diarrhoea (NCD) in individually reared animals covering 42 villages of Barabanki and Raebareli districts, Uttar Pradesh, India. Total number of 102 faecal samples, collected from clinical diarrhoeic calves aged below 3 months during the month of April, 2010, were subjected for detection of viral antigens using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit (Bio-X Diagnostics, Belgium). The prevalence rates recorded for rota and corona viruses were 15.68% and 11.76%, respectively. The present study will help to devise suitable strategies for the prevention and control of neonatal calf diarrhoea especially in rural parts of the country.
