Abstract The reason of this paper is to determine and compare the type and age of cited journals literature in doctoral theses of political science at the Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra and Maharshi Dayanand University, India. It also aims to improve the existing journals literature at India. As doctoral theses present a well-situated source of citations for examination, the authors conducted a citation analysis of all doctoral theses completed during the period 1969–2012 in the political science. Bibliographic data were extracted from each citation in the reference list and later analyzed using Microsoft Excel Sheet. Availability of all cited journals was checked in doctoral theses submitted to department library list. This comparative study reveals the coverage to which the Central University collections answer the research requirements of researchers. The findings show that political science researchers use significantly a greater number of scholarly journal papers.
