Abstract

The present study was planned to evaluate the antidiabetic potential as well as antiulcer activity of flower extract of J. sambac. The diabetic activity was studied by oral glucose tolerance test, alloxan induced diabetes, streptozotocin induced diabetes models. The antiulcer activity was studied in rats in which gastric ulcers were induced by oral administration of ethanol or by pyloric ligation. Ranitidine, sucralfate, Glibenclamide were used as standards. The blood glucose levels of test extract treated animals were found to be significantly less in all the models compared to diabetic control. Similarly the ulcer index in the test extract treated animals was found to be significantly less in all the models compared to vehicle control animals. The anti-diabetic and antiulcer activities of J. sambac extract were however, less than that of standard. Our results suggest that J. sambac extract possesses significant antidiabetic property as well as antiulcer property.
