Abstract Introduction: Spleen is supplied by splenic artery which arises from coeliac trunk and runs along the upper border of pancreas. It shows different patterns in origin, course, branches and variations. Aim: To study the origin, course, branches and variations of splenic artery in adult human cadavers. Materials and methods: This study was carried out in Department of Anatomy, D.Y. Patil Medical College, under D.Y. Patil University, Kolhapur. In the study, 50 embalmed cadavers were dissected by standard methods of dissection. The splenic artery, its course, branches and variations were studied. Results and discussion: In most cases, artery originates from coeliac trunk except in one which originated from gastrolineal trunk, the suprapancreatic course was seen in 8 cadavers and retropancreatic course was seen in 12 cadavers. Left gastroepiploic artery was present in all cases and was seen to originate from splenic artery in 36 cases, from terminal branch in 12 cadavers and from inferior polar artery in 2 cadavers, both polar branches were seen in 5 cadavers while superior polar in 8 cadavers and inferior polar in 6 cadavers were noticed. Conclusion: The knowledge of anatomy of splenic artery its branches and variations is essential for surgeons and sonologist. This will reduce the intraoperative time and complications.
