Traditional Media of North East: An Effective Tool for Technology Transfer

Abstract

It is a well known fact that media (audio, video or both) stimulates our sensory organs in a much larger way and consequently enhanced our learning, so, understanding. If the media is traditional then, their impacts become bigger. Traditional media is way of expression through folk lore, folk songs, storytelling, poem reciting etc. conserved from generation to generation and peculiar to the particular locality. Traditional media can be observed in any field such as health, nutrition, meteorology, agriculture etc. Agriculture is a huge reservoir of traditional media. People use to celebrate their happiness of sowing the crop or harvesting the same through traditional songs, dance or both such as Baisakhi in Punjab or Bihu in Assam practiced during harvesting of paddy. In case of North East India the list is very huge due to its diversity. North East India is one of hot spot for biodiversity in the world. The biodiversity of North East India is not only limited to the flora and fauna, but extended to the traditional media also. The rich cultural heritage of this part of India is still conserved and expressed through folk lore, folk songs, local paintings and so on. This paper is an attempt to document some of the folk songs related with agriculture, practiced by the different tribes of various states from North East India and also how to utilize the traditional media effectively for disbursement of information and then desirable action.
