Online published on 21 July, 2020. Abstract Orthodontic treatment aims at achieving structural and functional efficiency with aesthetic harmony. A successful treatment requires patient's complete co-operation over a considerable period of time. The eventual outcome and longevity of treatment are dependent on personal maintenance with routine follow-up appointments. Most clinicians conduct routine reinforcements of instructions verbally and in writing. Laxity in these instructions may affect the longevity of treatment, loss of chair time, considerable loss of confidence in dental and general health care of the patient and may even lead to stress. Lack of compliance may be due to various factors. Although the knowledge and skills of the clinician remain significant, the cooperation of the patients and that of the parents plays a major role in achieving the desired results. Prediction of patient compliance could be helpful to anticipate problems that might arise during the treatment and alleviate them before they impede or interfere with the treatment. This can be achieved by an effective communication between the dentist and the patient. This paper signifies the importance of patient compliance in orthodontics.
