Abstract Skills and competencies in using ICT based applications and services is considered as one of the very important and essential requirements among the library professionals. The purpose of this study is to assess the skills and competencies of the librarians of the selected Aided First Grade College (AFGC) Libraries affiliated to Kuvempu University in the jurisdiction of Shimoga and Chikmagalur Districts. Also, based on the results suggestions have been put-forth for improvement of skills and competencies in library professionals. The study reveals that the majority of librarians are having good skills and competencies in using ICT hard wares, soft ware and applications. This study shows that the skills and competencies among the librarians they have gained through continuous training and work involvement in the latest advancement of ICT. This study also provides insight in to the state of skills and competencies among the librarians to be adequately equipped with all the ICT based activities. Finally, in view of acquiring and updating skills on ICT by the librarians the researcher feels that there is a need of continuous different level of training and awareness programmes are required for library professionals.
