Online published on 30 March, 2015. Abstract Separation of molars is utmost crucial in orthodontic treatment using a fixed appliance. Separation of contact points between adjacent teeth is an integral part of any orthodontic treatment protocol as well as certain dental procedures. Separators were developed with the intention of separating adjacent teeth to aid in banding of teeth for initiating orthodontic treatment. The ideal separator should give rapid and good separation with minimum patient discomfort, thereby making the fitting of the band to the tooth easily. Moreover, the separator should be easily cleaned, radio opaque and not be lost. Different types of separators have been used in orthodontics such as brass wires, latex elastics, elastomeric and spring-type separators. During the past 10 years, springs and elastomerics have been the mostly used. This article highlights the current facts and figures of separation and their role in orthodontics.
