Abstract This study analysed the Citations of 30 theses submitted at the Dr. Tulsi Das Library of Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, during the period 2000 to 2010. The main objective of the study was to know the dependency of MD/MCh residents on the library collection for their research work; to assist the library staff in determining which type of information resource is mostly used; and to know the most cited journals, their impact factor and the online availability of most cited journals. This study was limited to the theses submitted at the Gastroenterology Department. This study will help in collection development and to guide the residents in their research work. The study revealed that journals (94%) were the most cited Information sources, followed by books (3.69%), Reports (1.24%), Conference/Workshop (0.67%), website (0.2%) and other theses (0.1%). On the basis of this study, a local ranking list of journals was made, which could serve as a guide for the residents preparing for their MD/MCh thesis in Gastroenterology Department.
