Abstract Digitally we have moved to a point where we have information in 2 Dimensions (2D) as well as 3 Dimensions (3D) formats. The paper discusses the 3D technology used in preservation of cultural heritages, expanding virtual tourism and elaborate various Engineering models etc. There exist many issues which need to be addressed by the researchers. The paper discusses these issues in detail which need to be solved with high meticulousness for the preservation of 3D files for future use. The field is slowly becoming the part of domain for information professionals as it has been their job to curate the files with metadata and archive it for the future generations using any open digital repository software.
