Abstract The position of women is a difficult and complicated problem. The literature on Indian history is plentiful with contradictory and conflicting views on the status of woman. It is therefore, necessary to trace this position in the historical perspective. Officially and constitutionally they have the equal status but socially the reality contradicts therefore the solution lies with the awareness and willful struggle to achieve this legal and official rights to convert into the ground reality and therefore in whole society Indian women must be treated socially politically economically are equal to men. They have to change their mindset and come out of the shackles of social evils. After that they get greater freedom, better education, and self reliant, independent good jobs, better treatment from men. It will only happen when they develop courage, power among themselves and not entertain any discrimination and raise their voices against any discrimination.
