“Probiotics – an emerging concept ….a review” Dr. Sunil M K, Professor & Head, Dr. Kumar Raghav, Reader, Dr. Guru E N, Sr.Lecturer Department Of Oral Medicine & Maxillofacial Radiology, D.J College of Dental Sciences and Research, Modinagar, U.P. Abstract The term “Probiotics” comes from the Greek “for life”. Probiotics are live microorganisms (in most cases, bacteria) that are similar to beneficial microorganisms found in the human gut. They are also called as “friendly bacteria” or “good bacteria.” The first recorded probiotic was fermented milk for human consumption. After that, Probiotics became popular with animal nutrition. Probiotics have been used as growth promoters, for lactose intolerance3, antitumour and anticholestrolaemic effects. When ingested, these living microorganisms replenish the microflora in the intestinal tract. This results in the promotion of a number of health-enhancing functions, including enhanced digestive function. Top Keywords Probiotics, Lactobacillus, Antibiotics. Top |
