Abstract

Objective Structured Clinical Examination has become an important method of assessment in the past few years. Its utilization was well established during the pandemic. Definitely it had changed the expectation of the examinee and as well the examiner's perception towards practical examination.

Objective

To determine the perception of faculty and Undergraduate Students on Objective Structured Clinical Examination and Traditional Practical Examination.

Methods

ACross sectional research design was used to conduct the study among 157 subjects that included students and faculty members. The students and faculty members who had previous experience on both Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) and as well as on Traditional Practical Examination (TPE) were included in the study. The questionnaire was prepared in a Google form, sent to the participants through email and the response was collected.

Results

In the study18 (75%) faculty members had very positive perception on OSCE. Among students about 126 (94%) had a very positive perception about OSCE. 19 (79%) of faculty members had very positive perception on TPE. Among students about 120 (90%) had very positive perception about TPE. The perception of faculty members and students on OSCE and TPE both are positively correlated respectively r=.953 and r= 0.979.

Conclusion

The current study concluded that both OSCE and TPE are important components of a clinical examination. The perception of faculty members and expectation of students was similar for both the methods of examination. Hence, conducting OSCE after each clinical posting as well before or after TPE will be more beneficial for students' evaluation.
