Preparation and characterization of biochar: An overview Chilwal Aaradhana*, Kothiyal Shivani Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, 141004, Punjab, India *Email for correspondence: acaaradhana@gmail.com
Online published on 23 January, 2019. Abstract The paper provides an updated review on the subjects, the available alternative to produce biochar from biomass and quantification and characterization of biochar. The property of biochar produced is much dependent upon the composition and type of biomass and the conditions at which biomass is carbonized. The physical and chemical characterization is necessary to identify the basic structure and property of biochar and to predict its potential in various environmental applications. Biochar is a promising alternative to remedy the soils with low fertility levels, poor water retention capacity and contamination with heavy metals. Thus biochar may be a sustainable way out of many current agriculture-and environment-related problems if fully studied and exploited.
