Abstract

Screening of chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) genotypes was carried out in greenhouse conditions with artificial inoculation of thrips, Scirtothrips dorsalis Hood to confirm the field resistance and to appraise the morphological and biochemical basis of resistance. Selected accessions from the preliminary field trials conducted on 407 germplasm entries (265 indigenous and 142 exotic accessions) were evaluated in the greenhouse along with resistant and susceptible checks. The accessions IC572481, EC596952 and IC572504 were identified as resistance sources and IC570485 was found to be moderately resistant based on % leaf curl index. A total phenol content of 7.33 mg/l0g of leaf was observed in the resistant accession EC596952, A higher titre of leaf phenolics was found to be positively correlated with the resistance traits, while the trichome density in abaxial leaf surface was observed not associated with the resistance.
