Genre approach to write right Gummaraju Rajashekar Assistant Professor, Dept. of English, University College of Arts, Tumkur University, Tumkur, Karnataka, India Online published on 11 April, 2014. Abstract Genre is basically name given to the ‘make-up’ of language used in a particular situation or context. It refers to the language processes involved in doing things with language. Though, it may be said at a later stage, that genre-based teaching of writing exposes the learners to just a set of pre-determined generic features of the target text and does not actually evoke an authentic response or prompt an involvement of writer with the text being written, its significance as a tool of learning in the initial stages is established beyond any doubt. The approach also fosters autonomy by which the learners can predict the moves particular to various texts and relate different texts to their generic features. Product and process approaches to writing have paved way for Genre approach to writing with a shift in focus from grammatical accuracy to purpose. This approach facilitates learners’ understanding of textspecific linguistic and rhetorical features, structure and organisation of the text and also affords them a ‘writer's vision’. However, the approach demands from teachers more preparedness and also an awareness of various possibilities within a particular genre.
