For decades, the periodontist has sought ways to repair the damage caused by periodontal disease by surgical procedures which includes the use of grafting materials, barrier membranes and growth factors. Currently with the improved knowledge of cellular and molecular events involved in periodontal regeneration, the focus has shifted to cell based therapy approaches. This review provides an insight regarding stem cells and their potential use in periodontal regeneration therapy.
