Online published on 7 February, 2018. Abstract Background Pancytopenia is one of the most common indications for bone marrow examination (BME). There are spectrum of conditions involving the bone marrow that can present with pancytopenia and include malignant as well as benign diseases. Aims and objectives The objective of this study was to evaluate the BM findings in cases of pancytopenia. Materials and Method This was a prospective study of 70 cases of pancytopenia presenting over a period of 1 year. Results Out of 70 cases, the most common cause for pancytopenia in this study was megaloblastic anemia (58.53%). Acute leukemia (12.85%), aplastic anemia (8.58%), myelofibrosis (8.58%), myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) (5.73%), multiple myeloma (5.73%) were the other causes of pancytopenia. Conclusion BME is an important investigation in diagnostic workup of cases of pancytopenia. In majority of cases, it can provide an accurate diagnosis or atleast can guide the approach towards diagnosis and management. Thus, it should be performed in all cases of persistent pancytopenia.
