Abstract

A survey of distribution pattern, flock size, breed characteristics, management practices, prevalence of specific and non-specific diseases, reproductive and growth performance of Ganjam sheep and economic status of sheep breeders was conducted at the home tract of Ganjam sheep in Ganjam district of Orissa. The Ganjam sheep distributed in the southern parts of the state constituted, 25.23% of the total sheep population of Orissa. Predominantly, the animals are brown to tan in colour, medium sized, non-seasonal breeders and polyestrus in nature. The animals sustain themselves on grazing. The average body weight at birth, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months of age were 2.08, 8.61, 12.92, 16.51 and 18.61 kg, respectively. The males were heavier than the females in all stages of growth. The growth rate was higher in pre weaning than the post weaning age.
