Abstract To study the prevalence and antimicrobial pattern of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in sheep and goats, 325 samples (75 sheep nasal swabs, 100 sheep milk samples, 75 goat nasal swabs and 75 goat milk samples) were collected from Veterinary Clinical Complex and nearby villages of Acharya Narendra Deva University of Agriculture and Technology, Kumarganj (Uttar Pradesh), during July, 2019 to September, 2020. For selective growth of MRSA, sterile molten mannitol salt agar was mixed aseptically with oxacillin resistance supplement (2μg/ml). A total of 66 MRSA isolates (29 from sheep nasal swabs, 11 from sheep milk, 14 from goat nasal swabs and 12 from goat milk) were isolated. The antimicrobial drug sensitivity of isolates was tested for 10 antibiotics using the modified disc diffusion method. Out of 66 MRSA isolates, all were resistant to methicillin and oxacillin followed by 96.97% to ampicillin and 95.45% to cefoxitin. The highest susceptibility was shown for ciprofloxacin (89.39%), followed by vancomycin (86.36%), chloramphenicol (84.85%), gentamycin (84.85%) and tetracycline (84.85%). With respect to multiple antibiotic resistance (MAR), out of 66 MRSAisolates 29, 17, 11, 7, 1 and 1 isolates were resistant to 4, 5, 6, 7, 7 and 3 antibiotics with MAR index of 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8 and 0.3, respectively. The study concluded the prevalence of multidrug-resistant methicillin-resistant S. aureus in sheep and goats may pose possible public health concern.
