Cattle are vital component of life in Uttar Pradesh-ranging from economy to culture; and indigenous breeds have special role in this arena. But now a day the species is facing multiple challenges, slaughter being the most dangerous one out of them. State of Uttar Pradesh has its regime —having explicit and elaborate measures— to prevent cattle slaughter and protect them from killing. The enactment and its purpose have been receiving the impact of changing phases. Time to time many relevant changes has been brought into the legislative provisions particularly and in statute book as a whole. Though measures are provided for a long time, the enforcement experienced not a firm pattern. Now, in recent hours, it is being tackled with ‘hard hands’. The study goes through these entire facets to explore the scene in the State and tries out to understand the various concerns related to cow protection cause imposed on ‘State’ by the Constitution.
