Caste & Class in Retail Market: Sociological Reflections of Exchange Rajesh R Associate Professor, Department of Sociology, Bangalore University, Bangalore, India Online published on 7 May, 2014. Abstract Societies across the world have evolved several institutions over the ages. Similarly, the earlier assumptions have been that all these institutions are free from mutual influences and hence operate in isolation. Neo-classical economists who claim market is the place of exchange where economic parameters play and there is n o room for ‘non-economic’ parameters. As a matter of fact, this paper questions this theory of maximisation only by monetary means and the theory of rationality which is embedded of economic rationality. Different societies have different hierarchies and they show up on almost all institutions in one form other. This paper system explores the existence of caste and class in markets.
