Abstract The present investigation entitled “Effect of artificial ageing on seed quality of onion seeds” was carried out during 2014 at Department of Seed Science and Technology, B. A. College of Agriculture, AAU, Anand (Gujarat). Seeds of eight onion genotypes were used in present investigation. They are Bhima shubhra, Bhima kiran, Bhima raj, Bhima red, Bhima super, Bhima shweta, N-2-4-1 and Gujarat white onion-1. Six seed lots containing 100 seeds each belonging toeach genotype were subjected to artificial ageing treatments for 0 (control), 3, 5 and 7 days. The experiment was done first in laboratory conditions. Observations recorded in the present study in laboratory were germination percentage (12th day after germination), seedling length (cm), seedling fresh weight (mg), seedling dry weight (mg), seedling vigour index-I, seedling vigour index-II and seed leachete electrical conductivity (|i si cm-1g-1). Results showed that N-2-4-1 when subjected to artificial ageing treatments outperformed other seven genotypes in laboratory conditions for all the characters under study.
