Abstract

Introduction

Diatoms are unicellular algae which when enters a drowning person reaches different sites in body through lungs and blood circulations which establishes the ante-mortem drowning. Numerous studies has been reported on examination, identification and linking of diatoms from a drowned person with the source of drowning and actual sites.

Material and Methods

Present research work is attempted to study the clenching pattern of diatoms on different clothing stuffs. The extraction of diatoms was performed by using acid digestion technique from all different fabrics chosen for study and than they were compared with the diatoms of standard water sample to study the frequency of diatoms. The clothe stuffs selected for the study were cotton, silk, jute and synthetic cloth.

Results

It has been observed that few species showed good number of diatoms attached to different clothing fabrics and some species attachment was found to be very negligible.

Conclusion

The results obtained were quite appreciable and may assist the forensic investigators in preliminary examination of locating the original site of drowning of the individual from clothes worn by that person.
