This review provides an understanding on the status of congenital disorders in India; the incidence and prevalence rates, contributing factors, fallacies in existing genetic services and impediments limiting community genetic services in India. The literature review for this article included a systemic search of scientific publications using Pub Med, Google Scholar, and Web of Knowledge by using the following keywords: “Genetic disorders, ” “Congenital anomalies, ” “Birth defects” and “Genetic services”.
