Cottage industrial growth in Ambedkarnagar district, 1998–2008: a block-level analysis Anjum Mahvish, Ullas T. Research Scholar, Department of Geography, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh-202002, Uttar Pradesh, India Online published on 11 April, 2014. Abstract Ever since the inception of planning for economic development in India great emphasis has been laid on the development of small-scale and cottage industries. Cottage industries play a vital role in country's economy despite phenomenal growth of large scale sector. In fact they contribute significantly in the national economies throughout the world and are considered to be an engine of growth in developed and industrialised countries. The emphasis placed on the cottage industry sector in the industrial development of the country is due to its high employment generating capacity and low investment requirement. The objective of this paper is to examine the growth performance of cottage industries in Ambedkar nagar district by blocks over ten years. The analysis is based on secondary data collected from village industry office of concerned district. Based on these data we first constructed time series on the number of registered units and employment as on March 31st every year and then calculated the growth rate of two series separately for each block. Finding shows that there is inter-block variation in growth rate of cottage industries. Top Keywords Cottage industry, Employment, Growth rate, Industrial development. Top | |
