Abstract

Asthma prevails and affects almost 20 million people in the United States and more than 300 million people worldwide. Asthma is a heterogeneous group of conditions. Obstructive airway illnesses are manifested with chronic inflammation affecting the whole respiratory tract. Obstruction and hindrance is usually intermittent and reversible in asthma, emotional stress can either precipitate or provoke both acute and chronic asthma. New drugs are needed because those that are currently available cannot control symptoms and hinder in the patients and can cause adverse reactions. The development of small molecule therapeutics and biologic agents may improve asthma care in the future. Effective treatment of severe asthma is a major unmet need because patients’ symptoms are not controlled on treatment with inhaled therapy. This review discusses the recent advances and the evidence for current available strategies targeting the pathogenesis and drugs for this time critical emergency.
