Covariates and Prevalence of obesity among the Adults in a Rural Area of Meerut, UP: A Community based Study

Abstract

Background

Body Mass Index (BMI) has been shown to be an important predictor of risk of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and associated with risk factors for NCDs.

Aim and Objective

To study the association of BMI and WHR with socio-demographic factors in a rural area of Meerut.

Method

This community based cross sectional study was conducted among rural population aged ≥ 20 years in Parikshitgarh block, Meerut.

Result

In this study according to BMI prevalence of overweight/obesity was 11.9% while by WHR it was 30.8%.

Conclusion

Obesity has no longer remained a problem of only urban, nuclear family and upper socio economic class but rural Indian belonging to middle class has also dragged into the so called “problem of affluent.
