Abstract Ever since the initiation of the economic reforms in India, organisations, both public and private, have been revamping their HR systems to enhance the efficiency. Astudy of performance appraisal system at the State Bank of India was conducted to find out the changes initiated in the system since Liberalization. The current performance appraisal system, introduced in the year 1993, uses a combination of Grading, Confidential Reporting, Critical Inddents and Essay method. It is an annual system. Criteria of appraisal are assessment of performance in Key Result Areas, qualitative aspects of performance and attributes. There are three categories of formats according to the responsibilities of the officers. Acritical analysis of the system has been done and certain suggestions have been offered by the authors. There is a need for revamping the reward system and performance evaluation systems in the public sector b~nks so as to develop the human resource. Top |
