Abstract

Micro RNAs (miRNAs) from diet can regulate endogenous genes. miRNAs, the small non-coding RNAs of approximately 22 nucleotides regulate gene expression by cleavage or translational inhibition of the target mRNA. As Citrus sinensis Pers. (Sweet orange) has anti-oxidant properties and numerous health benefits, its miRNAs were screened for potential targets in human and among human pathogens. Putative viral and human gene targets were identified for the three miRNAscsi miR398a, csi miR390a and csi novel miRNA-05 using in-silico methods. The targets were confirmed using standard miRNAtarget prediction tools such as RNA hybrid, psRNATarget, GUUGle and RNA22. Based on these bioinformatic analyses, it was confirmed that csi-miR398a targets Hepatitis C virus polyprotein gene, csi miR390a targets Homo sapiens PLEKHA6 mRNA and csi novel miRNA 05 targets Homo sapiens GFRA2, mRNA. The future prospects of this study could be potential usage of C. sinensis miRNA in treatment of these viral and human diseases by dietary means or by exosome mediated drug delivery of these miRNAs.
